  • I’ve never heard that before, and doing some very light research, it does seem like “Spade” is a slur from the 1920s. At the same time however, the phrase “Calling a spade a spade.” is a “modern” (1500’s) adaption of an ancient Greek phrase.

The easy solution here is to just re-adapt it so it doesn’t use a racist term. To keep the theming of shovels of course, the easiest answer is “Calling a shovel a shovel.”

Thanks for the info, always good to learn a new thing or two :)

  • As someone who feels similarly about AI art, but joined db0 anyway: I like the other things they got going on and I’m not stupid enough to whine and complain about the one thing I don’t like. (I guess, technically this is doing some of that but shut up xD)

It’s like if I went to a bar that has a bunch of games in it, and one is a bunch of pool tables or something and I really hate pool, I’m not gonna throw a fuss demanding they remove it? Some people like it even if I think it’s not that cool.

  • I hate these because its impossible to remember people unless they had some super cool thing. my usual go to is “I’m Nora and I can scuba dive.” which is cool and fine, but I could talk about that, and its so much more interesting and useful to find what people enjoy about their things.

as an example, you said you like reading! I enjoy a good book too! what are some of your favorite books and genres? do you have a Lemmy community you go to for book stuff? Tell me about a book you hate!

theres so many questions people could ask, but never do, so everyone becomes horribly forgettable.

  • I don’t want to give them too much credit, because frankly i think its legitimately just stupidity at play.

But, if I were a billionaire who owed an assload of money to various oil countries like Russia and Saudis, while my own businesses were failing due to everyone realizing how stupid I was… I too might be inclined to sabatoge alternative energy sources by indirectly causing an enviornmental disaster or two effectively erroding whatever is left of the public’s trust in it.
