Kaity has just spun up a PieFed instance, which is open to anyone that wants to try it out.

PieFed is part of the “Threadiverse” along with lemmy and mbin. If you are already reading this in lemmy, then you already know what PieFed is about.

If you’re curious to try it out, or if you’re just looking for a way to avoid lemmy, you can find it at https://piefed.blahaj.zone/

Like our lemmy instance, we have set PieFed applications to require manual approval, but if you’re already a member of our lemmy instance, you can get auto approved by our modbot by quoting your registration code somewhere in your application.

silly question and it’s probably not possible but i wonder if there’s a way to sync the sticky posts from this community on piefed too (or make this community more prominent on piefed) since ive been using the piefed instance more and more now that i got used to it. :^

We don’t have any stickied posts on lemmy at the moment, so there is nothing to sync, but as I understand it, they will sync fine

That being said, another thing you can do is turn on notifications for the community itself. That way, you’ll get a notification whenever someone makes a new post (not comment) to the community. You can do the same thing with individual posts too, and get notifications whenever someone replies to a post, even if you didn’t make the original post!

Post pinning should be fixed now between Lemmy and Piefed, so if the mods unpin/repin it it should work

but like in the main screen when you first go to the page where it lists all of your subscribed posts. sometimes on lemmy they would stick to the top from the meta subreddit. :^

I’m out of the loop a bit. I know basically what tankies are, but I’m dumb.

Can somebody tow me in to the conflict that I’ve been seeing around between tankies and… Everybody else? Because I find it hard to believe that tankies really are just fascists but for liberal values in the most extreme way. Maybe I don’t totally understand the depths of how it works and the implications, and the issues that liberals but non tankies take with…tank…ie…ism…(?) (Authoritarian left?)

Like maybe people just want liberal values and want it to be more ensured that conservativism can’t be as insidious, but don’t ACTUALLY want to murder and eliminate a bunch of people to do it?

Are there any mature, rational, honest, good faith, and genuine discussions that I can look at or briefly be explained that also won’t start a bunch of conflict in this post?

            Maybe Just pm me.

Neat! I’ll have to play with it when I get the chance.

How does PieFed differ from Lemmy? At first glance, they seem like similar applications. Does it have any particular strengths or additional features I might want to try out?

There are lots of little usability improvements, and configuration options, but they are functionally very similar.

But it also has the advantage of not being written by the lemmy devs, which is a deal breaker for some folk

The web site has a list of differences between Lemmy and PieFed:

      • Comments with -10 score are collapsed by default.
      • Communities are organized into topics. See https://piefed.social/topics.
      • Image-heavy communities can have a tiled/masonry view, like https://piefed.social/c/pics@lemmy.world
      • People who get downvoted a lot end up with a ‘low reputation’ indicator next to their name. You’ll know it when you see it.
      • Hide all posts based on keyword filters.
      • Keyboard shortcuts.
      • Upvotes in meme communities do not add to reputation.
      • Better UI design (somewhat subjective!)
      • Improved hotness ranking algorithm (subjective)
      • Voting is private.
      • See also features for healthy communities.
      • Each community has it’s own wiki. Demo

This list isn’t exhaustive; one major feature that’s not listed there is de-duplication, where reposts all get combined into a single post with a split comment section (one for each individual post).

Apparently, your namesake (Interstellar) supports PieFed, but I haven’t been able to log in to Blahaj’s instance with it. It keeps giving me an error saying the API is not enabled.

I’ll just mention, in case it’s not apparent, Interstellar (the app) does support swipe gestures on posts and comments; you just need to enable them in the settings. I do realize the Blahaj PieFed instance hasn’t even enabled the API, so the app wouldn’t work with piefed.blahaj.zone yet.

BTW, I like your username :)

Okay I’m super impressed so far! I absolutely love this. Way better than lemmy imo, I’ll be migrating there fully. The wiki feature for the HRT community is gonna be super handy and things like post flairs/tags is something many have missed here!

Things like a [transmasc] and [transfem] and [transneutral] tag for trans_memes f.ex!

What I like: The UI is nice and there are many options that lemmy doesn’t have
What I dont: The lack of any formatting options for comments

Do you have any thoughts on how the two compare in terms of resource utilization (CPU / RAM) given a similar number of users and activity?

I’ve been curious about this, because Rust, the programming language used for Lemmy, is supposed to be a LOT more CPU/RAM efficient than Python, the language used for Piefed. Python, on the other hand, is supposed to be much faster to initially develop in, which would at least partly explain how Piefed gained so many features so quickly compared to Lemmy.

We don’t have a point of comparison so far, because the instances don’t share the same concurrent user numbers, but it would be hard to beat lemmy, which is really light for the volume it handles.

Ok, thanks! Kind of what I expected both in terms of not being able to compare exactly and Lemmy being light. I appreciate it.

From what I understand (and note that this is unsubstantiated, because we just simply don’t have the same size userbase/activity here), while lemmy is fairly good, piefed is supposedly even better.

The caveat here is of course that over time, software maturity and changes in prioritization of features (sacrificing efficiency for functionality or ease of use usually) results in certain decisions being made that affect the resource requirements.

It happened with lemmy (it used to be way more efficient than it is now), and it will happen to piefed too.

Better in terms of lightness? I would be extremely surprised given the vast difference in performance and resource consumption of Python vs. Rust, and because apparently Piefed already has more features than Lemmy does. But maybe I misunderstood your point.
