Esrthsea or Stormlight. Sanderson is an absolutely fun author but he’s not a particularly good writer. Earthsea (at least the first 2) are classics but as far as I recall, don’t have the depth etc that would really elevate them

Especially as this list seems to appreciate series, that’s where Malazan really shines.

I also haven’t read piranesi, murderbot, Tigana or Elric so can’t say where they go.

Replace stormlight. Le Guin is a far better writer than Sanderson. Personally I feel the later books in the earthsea series are really good, Tehanu being my favourite.

I really don’t understand why he’s so popular. The ideas are interesting but the delivery is bland, the characters are both formulaic and repetitive across the books, and the plot is always resolved at the last minute by some sort of deus ex machina development that blindsides everybody.

I also don’t get it. I find his writing style to be boring, and feel undeveloped, especially since I started as a child reading the classics. Maybe if he was my intro to books I’d feel differently. Same situation with JK Rowling as well, I just don’t get what everyone sees in her books compared to other fantasy novels.

I think he’s like the Marvel movies of fantasy books and popular for the same reasons; they’re easy, fun and have solid albeit mostly unspectacular action sequences.

I’m a huge Martha Wells fan but I actually find Murderbot to be one of her weaker series. Granted I only read the first two, but I just couldn’t get into it and enjoy it like I have with her other works

The first one was fun, but it gets a wee bit repetitive.

I’ll have to take a look at her other books. She’s definitely a good writer.
